What Does the Bible Say About Defending Yourself?
As Christians, we believe that the Bible teaches us about justice, love, and self-defense. The Bible emphasizes the value of human life and the importance of protecting oneself and loved ones. In the book of Exodus, it states that if a thief is found breaking in at night and is killed in the process, there is no guilt of bloodshed (Exodus 22:2). This shows that there is recognition of the right to defend oneself and property.
At the same time, Jesus also taught us to turn the other cheek and to love our enemies (Matthew 5:39, 44). This can be seen as a call to seek reconciliation and peace rather than retaliation. The Bible also warns against taking revenge and encourages us to leave room for God’s justice (Romans 12:19).
In the context of self-defense, the principle of proportionality and necessity should be considered.
